PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Gerri Oliver, who is 80 years young and owner of the historic Palm Tavern, will gather with her friends and colleagues as they pay tribute to her strength to endure; and

WHEREAS, Gerri Oliver and the Palm Tavern are legendary across the globe and have inspired many to journey to Chicago to experience living history; and

WHEREAS, the Palm Tavern once provided a venue for artists, musicians, politicians and other celebrities, and continues to provide an arena of opportunity for emerging artists who seek a venue to ply their craft; and

WHEREAS, Gerri Oliver has been a cultural icon, refusing to alter the Palm Tavern and refusing to give up on 47th Street; and

WHEREAS the Palm Tavern has been a landmark located at 447 East 47th Street for 45 years in an area known as Bronzeville, which is now experiencing a renaissance; and

WHEREAS, the Palm Tavern has been host to a number of renowned film stars, artists and film makers; and

WHEREAS, on Sunday, February 13, from 12:00 noon until 12:00 am, a Midday to Midnight Gala will be hosted by the Friends of Gerri Oliver to show her their love and high esteem; and

WHEREAS, the event will feature emerging and established artists, musicians and poets, who will demonstrate their interpretation of the night's theme, The Strength to Endure;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD M. DALEY, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim February 13, 2000, to be GERRI OLIVER DAY IN CHICAGO, and invite all Chicagoans to pay tribute and be aware of the events arranged for this day.
